Ups and Downs

It was summer and I was ten

My leisure time

Spent on the village swings at play

Mostly alone

‘Til one bright day there came a girl

With golden hair

Joining me there on the seesaw

Up down and up

We played, her laughter ringing free

Her summer dress and bright blue eyes

Enchanted me

We spent that blissful summer there

‘Til she was gone

To grace our simple play no more

Down through the years

Through life’s long years of ups and downs

Still I recall

That golden girl who stole my heart

When I was ten.
